So you’ve got Broadband – what now?

What? You have not ordered yet! So what is stopping you? You don’t understand are worried by all these stories about viruses and security. Computers were never your strong point. Well help is at hand. I have been invited to write a regular column for the newsletter to try and help explain things and provide suggestions and ideas. Hopefully this will help demystify computers and the jargon that surrounds the subject and at least give you a starting point for understanding.

I will in the coming months try and cover a range of topics from backups to viruses, firewalls to software, Google to Linux, RAM and ROM, bits and bytes. I hope that this will prove useful. The aim is not to be technical, but to be informative. There are plenty of technical resources out there on the Internet, but if you don’t understand what they are talking about, they are not much help. Because this column is a new idea and I need to know what interests people, any suggestions for future topics are welcomed.

I also hope to publish each article on a website, together with more information and links to useful sites and resources. The article will be the starting point and the website will be where you go to get the full details and all the links, because having those links in the article wastes space and it is easy to get them wrong in print or when you are typing them in. Details of the website will be in next month’s column. Until then, you are welcome to e-mail me at theboffin@lordjohn.demon.co.uk, and I will read and attempt to answer any of your questions. If I don’t know the answer, I probably know someone else who does, so don’t feel that you cannot ask.
