Just Up My Street

The Internet and World Wide Web have brought us much, but the very large and sometimes seemly disorganised nature makes it hard to find things. Search engines like www.google.com and www.yahoo.com help you have to know what you want. So there are some useful sites that provide things that are a little different.

www.simplyswitch.com and www.uswitch.com provide ways of comparing prices for Gas and Electricity, along with other things like credit cards or mortgages. These sites are designed to make it easy to switch suppliers and are simple to use.

www.kelkoo.co.uk provides a price comparison service on a large range of things from books to travel. There are other similar sites around. A travel only one is www.travelocity.com which is very easy to find out what is on offer for flights, hotels and car rental.

www.bt.com provides free on-line directory enquiries, while www.yell.com provides “yellow pages” directory information.

However one of my favourites is www.upmystreet.com because it provides not only useful local information, but allows you to search for things based on where you live. Just put in your postcode and then search for what you want. The results come back ordered in distance from where you live. We have used in several times locating things like jewellers, and local removal firms. However if you know the postcode of somewhere you are going, then you can use it for that area as well. Much easier that the normal lists from yellow pages or the phone book.
